Caring is in the DNA of hospice staff

This tribute page has been created to honour Patricia Anne Impey, known also by the nickname of Widdie by many of her family.
This wonderfully brave woman died on 9 August 2023 from bowel cancer after spending the last 19 days of her life at the Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.
Many people have asked me about the staff at the hospice and what I thought of them.
Without hesitating, I replied: “The staff have come from a different planet, the likes of whom I have never encountered anywhere else. The words to accurately describe how I regard them are yet to be found in the dictionary.
“Yes, the hospice is a specialism and cannot be compared with other care facilities, but the staff are a very special breed, it is in their DNA to give the best possible care, showing kindness and displaying empathy at every moment. Not just to Patricia but to myself too, as I spent almost every minute of the time she was there with her. Nothing was ever too much trouble for these wonderful people.
“Patricia and myself pledged financial support to the hospice while she was alive and her forward thinking was to ask those who attend her funeral not to spend money on flowers, but donate the equivalent to the hospice to help it to maintain and continue the wonderful work it does. Thinking of others was what she was all about.
“Patricia and I were together for nearly 40 years and far too soon she was cruelly taken from me, the rest of her family and friends. She was the greatest thing to have ever happened in my life and I will always treasure those precious memories I have of her.
“The pictures I have of her on my bedside cabinet, in the living room and the wallpaper on my iphone will be a continual reminder of radiance.
RIP, my one true love.
